Speech from Chinese Consul General Liu Kan
in China(Fujian)-Nigeria Trade and Investment Promotion
2014/06/28

His Excellency Vice Governor Zheng Xiaosong,

Distinguished members of Fujian delegation,

Honorable Deputy Speaker Kolawole

Distinguished Permanent Secretariat Mr. Tasir Olawale

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends:

Good morning!

It’s my great pleasure to attend China (Fujian)-Nigeria Trade and Investment Promotion. First of all, on behalf of Chinese Consulate-General in Lagos, I would like to extend my warm welcome to Vice Governor Mr. Zheng Xiaosong, his Fujian province delegation, and all entrepreneurs present here; also, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the presence of Honorable Deputy Speaker Kolawole and the Permanent Secretariat of Financial and Industry Ministry in Lagos Government, Mr. Tasir Olawale. Meanwhile, I am so delighted to see so many successful entrepreneurs gathering here, which is a solid evidence that China-Nigeria Strategic Partnership is more and more deepening and economic and trade relations are increasingly warming-up.

China and Nigeria are both developing countries and share long friendship. The existing complementarities between our two economies provide a solid foundation for expanding our cooperation fields. In recent years, with the joint efforts from both sides, the cooperation and exchanges in the fields of politics, economics, infrastructure, agriculture, communication, education, culture between China and Nigeria are developing in multi-levels, multi-channels and high standards. Nigeria is China’s second largest export market and third major trade partner in Africa.

In 2013, the trade volume between two countries amounted to thirteen point six billion USD, which set a new record, and the actual Chinese non-financial direct investment in Nigeria was one point seventy nine billion USD, getting involved in sectors such as Petroleum, Free Zone, Iron and Steel, Manufacture, Agriculture, etc. Nigeria now is one of the most important investment destinations for Chinese companies in Africa. More than that, the value of newly signed contracts from Chinese Project Contracting Companies in Nigeria reached eight point one billion USD, which ranks first among all African countries. At present, hundreds of Chinese enterprises—both State Owned and Private enterprises—invest and develop in Nigeria; more than sixty five thousand Chinese citizens now live and work in Nigeria, which also ranks top in all African countries. Meanwhile, more and more competent entrepreneurs visit and carry out economic and trade activities in China. Chinese Consulate-General in Lagos issued twenty thousand visas to Nigerians last year; and in first half of this year, we have issued Nigerians nearly ten thousand visas, ninety five percent of which are business visas. Nigerian entrepreneurs are playing a very important role in promoting the development of the economic and trade cooperation between China and Nigeria.

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends:

From 6th to 8th of May, Chinese premiere Li Keqiang paid an official visit to Nigeria, which was fruitful and successful. This visit has injected fresh energy to China-Nigeria relations. Two countries agreed to expand the cooperation in various areas such as railway, aviation, power station, agriculture, financial, energy and so on; 13 cooperation documents were signed, which pushes Chine-Nigeria strategic partnership to a new stage featured by comprehensive development. It is no exaggeration to say that China-Nigeria economic and trade relationship currently stands in the best historical period and the closing China-Nigeria friendship is leading the cooperation of two countries into the fast track of comprehensive development.

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends:

As the most populous city in Nigeria, the economy of Lagos state is most advanced and active, that makes Lagos an economic center in Nigeria and a gateway of Chinese enterprises into the market of Nigeria and West Africa. On the other hand, as the most rapid growing and competent emerging area in China, Fujian Province is the fastest growing point of the coastal area in “Twelfth Five Years Plan” in China. Since the reform and opening up, Fujian Province’s economy has maintained a very high speed development. The level of economic extroversion and marketization are improving unceasingly; Fujian Province is also one of the most opening areas in China. Last December, I paid an official visit to Fujian Province, witnessed the great achievement Fujian Province had made, and was deeply impressed by its advanced industries such as machinery, manufacture, electronics, communication, motor, agricultural products processing, marine products processing, etc. I am convinced that, with the rapid development of the China-Nigeria relations, Fujian Province will cooperate more closely and share more win-win opportunities with Lagos State,

Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Friends:

As an old Chinese saying puts, “Long distance separates no bosom friends”. Looking ahead, as long as we can be dedicated to maintain the sound and steady development of China-Nigeria relations, as long as the entrepreneurs from two countries can be committed to run business based on mutual benefits and win-win results, we can definitely witness a better future of China-Nigeria cooperation.

Lastly, I sincerely wish Fujian delegation a successful and smooth visit in Nigeria; I also warmly welcome all Nigerian entrepreneurs present here to pay a commercial visit to and do business with Fujian and China. Chinese Consulate General is willing to help facilitate your visiting China. Wish all the entrepreneurs here a thriving business and all the best!

Thank you!
